Aag Lagay Basti Mein: Box Office, Cast, Story and What the Critics Said

··8 min read

Aag Lagay Basti Mein is the biggest Pakistani film of 2026 and the second-biggest Pakistani film ever made at the box office. Only The Legend of Maula Jatt has earned more. Released for Eid ul-Fitr, Bilal Atif Khan's crime comedy pulled in Rs 101 crore worldwide on the back of a tight, funny script and Mahira Khan playing completely against type.

What is Aag Lagay Basti Mein about?

Barkat (Fahad Mustafa) is an honest, broke cleaner. His wife Almaas (Mahira Khan) is tired of being honest and broke, and she dreams of getting out, ideally to Dubai. So the two of them decide on one small theft to change their luck. It doesn't stay small. The money drags them into a world of rival gangs, kidnappings and ransom demands, and the bigger the mess gets, the less the couple trust each other.

The first teaser set the tone with a fable about a hen that lays golden eggs, a neat shorthand for the film's real subject: greed, and how one shortcut leads to the next. It's a comedy of errors on the surface, but the jokes come from two ordinary people making worse and worse decisions under pressure, which gives it more bite than the usual Eid entertainer.

The official trailer, released 9 February 2026 on ARY's YouTube channel.

Fahad Mustafa plays Barkat, the honest cleaner, and Mahira Khan plays his restless wife Almaas. Jawed Sheikh is Marble Seth and Tabish Hashmi is Changaiz. The wider cast includes Salahuddin Tunio, Shamim Hilaly, Ayub Khoso, Mohammed Ehteshamuddin, Samra Shehzadi and Ali Abdullah, along with several social media personalities making their film debuts.

If you know Fahad from television, his production company Big Bang is also behind Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum, his record-breaking drama with Hania Aamir. Mahira, meanwhile, is also back on TV right now as the villain of Mitti De Baway, which makes 2026 her busiest year in a while.

Behind the scenes

  • It's Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan's second film together, after Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad, and the first time Fahad has acted alongside his father, the veteran actor Salahuddin Tunio.
  • Bilal Atif Khan co-wrote the film with Naeem Ali, directed it, and co-edited it with Rasheed Khan and Salman Noorani.
  • Cinematographer Abid Rizvi shot it on wide-angle lenses, between 18mm and 35mm.
  • The first teaser opened with the fable of the hen that lays golden eggs before showing anything from the film, setting up greed as its subject months before release.
  • Mahira Khan has said the role required her to "play against [her] usual nature".

The film opened on Eid ul-Fitr against two other Pakistani releases, Bullah and Delhi Gate, and won the holiday comfortably. Its Rs 16.2 crore domestic opening weekend was reported as the biggest Eid opening ever in Pakistan, and overseas audiences added another Rs 11 crore in the same weekend.

Three records came out of that run. It's the second-highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time, behind only The Legend of Maula Jatt; it's only the second Pakistani film ever to cross Rs 100 crore; and it's ARY Films' biggest release worldwide. Overseas, it comfortably outperformed Bullah in North America, with the US, Canada and the UAE its strongest markets outside Pakistan.

The run held up rather than burning out after Eid. It more than tripled its opening-weekend total over the next four weeks, the pattern you see when word of mouth is doing the selling.

It wasn't close. Aag Lagay Basti Mein earned more than five times what Bullah did, and Delhi Gate's figures were never published. One odd detail: Jawed Sheikh had major roles in two of the three films, opening against himself on the same day.

4Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 22018Rs 73 crore (about US$2.5 million)
5London Nahi Jaunga2022Rs 55 crore (about US$2 million)

Mahira Khan is in all three of the top films: Maula Jatt, Aag Lagay Basti Mein and Love Guru. The only comparable record belongs to Humayun Saeed, who leads three of the top five (Love Guru, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 and London Nahi Jaunga). The table also shows how far ahead Maula Jatt still is, at roughly four times Aag Lagay Basti Mein's gross. Maula Jatt was an outlier; Aag Lagay Basti Mein is the better measure of what a big Pakistani hit looks like now.

What critics said about Aag Lagay Basti Mein

Reviews were mostly positive, and unusually consistent about what works and what doesn't.

“A whip-smart, well-rounded film.”
— Mohammad Kamran Jawaid, Dawn
  • The screenplay. Jawaid's point was that the screenplay "was polished well before it went on set". Weak scripts are where most Pakistani comedies come apart, so that's real praise.
  • Mahira Khan against type. Nearly every review singled her out. Dawn Images' Eefa Khalid noted how far Almaas is from "her usual screen image", and Khaleej Times called her "a revelation", leading the film's comic chaos. Mahira has said herself that she had to "play against [her] usual nature" for the role.
  • Tabish Hashmi. The surprise of the film. One review called him the film's "best thing", and Dawn Images also praised how he handled Changaiz.
  • Fahad Mustafa. Khaleej Times called him "the film's anchor" but noted the role stays close to characters he has played before. Solid, not stretching.

The criticism is just as consistent. At 140 minutes it runs long, the first half takes its time getting going, the romantic subplot is familiar, and several reviewers felt the film lectures its audience more than once. Youlin Magazine was the harshest, arguing the action-heavy climax has "little logic and lots of bullets" and borrows too obviously from Hollywood thrillers.

Our verdict: why Aag Lagay Basti Mein worked

Pakistani cinema's recent hits have mostly been sold on scale, and Maula Jatt is the obvious example. Aag Lagay Basti Mein was sold on a premise you can explain in a sentence: a broke couple, one theft, everything going wrong. That kind of story spreads by word of mouth, and the box office curve says it did.

Casting Mahira Khan against her image was the other smart call. Audiences know her as the composed romantic lead, so watching her play a restless, scheming wife is a hook in itself, and the reviews suggest she makes it more than a gimmick. Tabish Hashmi, better known as a comedian and talk-show host, was the surprise most reviews mentioned.

The weaknesses the reviews agree on are familiar ones in Pakistani cinema: a 140-minute running time, a slow first half and a tendency to stop and moralise. Twenty minutes shorter, it would have been a much tighter film. Even so, its success makes a case the industry needs to hear: the money is in the writing.
