Hurmat is Hum TV's new Monday and Tuesday drama, and it has started a conversation that goes beyond the screen. Dananeer Mobeen plays a young woman who has just finished her degree and wants to keep studying, and a father who has decided that the outside world isn't for her.

It also marks the acting debut of YouTuber Shahveer Jafry, and that has divided viewers almost as much as the story has moved them. Two episodes have aired, and episodes 3 and 4 follow on 12 and 13 October.

Ali Tahir plays the father who controls every part of his family's life, and Uzma Hassan the mother who lives under the same rules as her daughter. Javed Sheikh is Hurmat's taya, the one adult in the family willing to take her side. Shahveer Jafry's character has only just been introduced, and how he fits into Hurmat's story is still unfolding.

The wider cast includes Shahbaz Shigri, Anoushay Abbasi, Farah Hussain, Mohja Kashif, Rameen Basharat, Mohammad Ahmed and Sana Humayun. We'll add their characters here as the story brings them forward.

What is Hurmat about?

Hurmat has just finished her bachelor's degree with good grades and wants to keep studying. Her father won't hear of it. He considers going out without need inappropriate for women, and Hurmat and her mother have spent their lives practically confined to the house. When her uncle steps in and enrolls her at university anyway, the first door opens, and the drama is about what happens when she walks through it.

There's a darker thread waiting. The first episode opens on Hurmat behind bars before cutting back to the start of her story, and the key art makes the same point. How a girl who just wanted an education ends up in a prison cell is the question the drama is built around.

Why Hurmat is hitting home

The strongest response so far has been to how familiar Hurmat's life is to some viewers. After the first two episodes, Dananeer Mobeen shared a comment on Instagram from a viewer who wrote that their own father had painted over the windows so the family couldn't look outside. She said she was glad people were connecting with the character, and saddened by the reason: "I'm so happy that you are connecting but also really, really sad."

Early reviews have backed her up. Critics have called her performance moving from the very first episode, and singled out Ali Tahir's powerful turn as her father, Javed Sheikh's warmth as her uncle, and the direction: fast-paced storytelling, natural light and wide overhead shots that make the house feel like the cage it is.

Shahveer Jafry's acting debut

Shahveer Jafry is best known for comedy videos on YouTube, and Hurmat is his first acting role on television. That's where the jokes have come from. Many viewers say they find it hard to take his serious scenes seriously because they know him for his laugh, and some joked that he looks like he's in one of his own sketches. Others have defended the attempt, and two episodes in, his role has been too small to judge fairly.

Is Hurmat worth watching? Our early take

Two episodes is too early for a final verdict, and this section will change as the story does. On paper, Hurmat's setup is one Pakistani TV has done many times: a controlling father, a frightened mother, a daughter who wants more. What lifts it is the execution. Kashif Anwar's past work, from Sabaat to Neem, suggests this won't stay a simple story, the prison-cell opening promises a sharper turn than the premise suggests, and Dananeer Mobeen is carrying the drama with a performance critics have called moving from the first scene.

What decides it from here is whether the story earns that opening and whether Shahveer Jafry grows into his role. If you're already following Mitti De Baway, Hurmat is a quieter, more domestic drama that fills the start of the week. For more of what's on air now, see our Pakistani drama coverage.
