Akka on Netflix: The Ending, the Shankar Twist, and Whether Keerthy Suresh's Gangster Queen Is Worth Three Hours

··9 min read
Key art: Netflix

In Pernuru, women hold the guns, the liquor licences and the gold, and men are kept out of power. Akka, Netflix and Yash Raj Films' new crime drama, is about the day that order is challenged. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani, the heir to the clan that runs the place; Radhika Apte plays Rudra, a killer from Bombay who arrives with a grudge and a plan to turn Pernuru's resentful men against their rulers.

The trailer passed 13 million views on YouTube in under two weeks, and the show has divided critics since the day it landed. Reviewers love the idea and the two leads, and are much harder on what the show does with them. The full cast, each episode, the ending, the real history behind Pernuru and the case for and against watching are all set out below.

The official trailer, from Netflix India's YouTube channel.

What is Akka about?

Pernuru is a kingdom where, after war took most of its men, women took charge and never gave it back. Three houses, each led by an akka, run the place and its business: the legal liquor trade and the gold. The rules are strict. Power passes from mother to daughter, an akka never marries, and to hold the title she must have a child, born or adopted. Men are kept out of power entirely, and plenty of them resent it.

In 1985, Mutthakka (Tanvi Azmi) is the head of the clan and Bhavani (Keerthy Suresh) is her heir, running the day-to-day business and loyal to every tradition, including the one that stops her marrying Nanda, the man she loves. Then Rudra (Radhika Apte) arrives from Bombay. She's been sent by Shankar, a gangster who was thrown out of Pernuru years ago, and she teams up with Amar, a local smuggler who has never managed to beat the akkas. Her plan is to rally the kingdom's angry men and pull the matriarchy down. It soon becomes clear that her reasons are personal.

How many episodes does Akka have?

Five, all released at once. That's the whole first season, and at 30 to 46 minutes an episode, it runs about three hours in total. Some sites list eight episodes; that's wrong, and Netflix's own listing has five. The episode guide below follows Netflix's descriptions and stays spoiler-light.

Akka ending explained (spoilers)

⚠ Who wins, who dies, and the mid-credits twistShow spoilers

Rudra's secret. Rudra isn't really an outsider: she's Bhavani's cousin. Her mother was a poor woman from the Jherum tribe who fell in love with Bhavani's uncle. Pernuru's rules wouldn't let them marry, the uncle took his own life, and Rudra's mother and the whole Jherum tribe were driven out of the kingdom as punishment. Rudra grew up with nothing, and her war on the clan is revenge.

How Rudra nearly wins. She sabotages Bhavani's trade until Bhavani is blamed and arrested, has Bhavani's mother assassinated, and leads the rising of Pernuru's men. Nanda, tired of being refused marriage, joins the rebels. By the last episode Bhavani's treasury has been looted, her army is gone and most of the people she loves are dead.

How Bhavani wins. With nowhere else to go, she turns to the Kathava, a tribe of women warriors whom her own family pushed to the edges of the kingdom after they rebelled against the sisters. They have every reason to refuse, but Bhavani manipulates them into fighting, and their attack turns the final battle into a one-sided massacre. Cornered, Rudra swallows a cyanide pill rather than surrender, echoing a killing from her very first scene. Bhavani does kill Nanda, on the seashore where they used to meet, because letting a rebel walk free would weaken her rule.

A different Pernuru. Bhavani doesn't simply restore the old order. She hands real power to the two tribes the akkas wronged, with the Jherum taking one region and the Kathava another, and she scraps the rule that only a mother can be an akka. It's a victory, but an expensive one: she ends the series powerful, and very alone.

The mid-credits twist. In a scene after the credits start, Shankar, the Bombay gangster who sent Rudra, is revealed to be Bhavani's real father, and he gets ready to return to Pernuru and take what's left. Bhavani doesn't appear to know. It's the clearest setup for a second season the show has.

Is Akka a true story?

No. Pernuru, its three houses and its gangster queens are all invented. The idea behind them isn't, though. Dharmaraj Shetty told the Free Press Journal that the world grew out of his research into a South Indian community whose rules passed lineage through women and kept family property from being divided. Keerthy Suresh has pointed out that while the characters speak Hindi, the show includes scriptures in Tulu, the language of coastal Karnataka.

Matrilineal inheritance was real in parts of South India: Kerala had the marumakkathayam system, and Tulu-speaking communities in coastal Karnataka followed aliyasantana, where property and family name passed through the female line. Both were ended by inheritance laws passed in the 20th century. Akka takes that history and imagines a version where women held not just the property but the guns. Shetty hasn't named the community he studied.

What does Akka mean?

Akka means "elder sister" in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi, among other languages. In Pernuru it's also a title: the akka is the woman who rules. "Akka means 'elder sister', and in this show, that name comes with a lot of power," Keerthy Suresh told The Telegraph's t2.

Akka review: what the critics say

“A women-run gangland is a great hook. The series just doesn't know what to do with it.”
— Trisha Gaur, Koimoi

Ratings have ranged from 2 to 3.5 stars, and the praise and the complaints line up almost everywhere. On the plus side: the premise, the look of the show and the two leads. Bollywood Hungama called Radhika Apte excellent and said Keerthy Suresh lets her expressions carry scenes, and Scroll found the series engrossing for the most part, with decent world-building and strong performances. Production design, the background score and the camerawork on location get credit too.

The writing gets most of the blame. The Hollywood Reporter India's Rahul Desai found it "all themes and labels" and pointed out that "a story about women who run the show, is a show run entirely by men". The Federal called it "thoroughly misjudged", a series that copies the gangster conventions it could have reinvented. Koimoi gave it 2 stars and warned off anyone without a high tolerance for gore. 123Telugu (2.75) found the finale too convenient, and Bollywood Hungama (2.5) called the final beach sequence unconvincing; both it and Koimoi felt the story could have been a film. The Federal also picked out the show's most interesting idea, upper-caste women ruling over the tribal women they call sisters, and noted that it's rushed through at the end.

Will there be Akka season 2?

Netflix hasn't announced one. The ending leaves the door wide open, though: Shankar is alive, he knows something Bhavani doesn't, and he's coming back. Whether Netflix orders more will depend on how many people watch over the coming weeks. If it happens, don't expect it soon: Akka was first announced in late 2023, its first look came out in February 2025, and it took until October 2026 to reach Netflix. We'll update this page if a second season is confirmed.

Who made Akka?

Akka is the first series from writer-director Dharmaraj Shetty, and the third show Yash Raj Films' streaming arm has made for Netflix, after The Railway Men (2023) and Mandala Murders (2025). Shetty approached Keerthy Suresh, the National Award winner best known for Mahanati, after seeing her in the Tamil revenge drama Saani Kaayidham. Akka was her first Hindi project, she has said, even though her Hindi film debut, Baby John, reached cinemas first, in 2024, while this show was still in the works.
