Tiger Shroff escaped a shooting in Mumbai on Sunday evening, when gunmen opened fire on his car in the western suburb of Juhu. The 36-year-old action star was not hit, but his driver and an auto-rickshaw driver nearby were hurt, and the attack is the latest in a string of gun attacks on Bollywood figures since 2024, several of them claimed in the name of the same jailed gangster.

Police moved quickly. Within 15 hours, three men had been arrested on a train in Rajasthan. What they still can't say is why.

What happened

Shroff was being driven away from a football session near Pushpa Park in Juhu, under the Juhu police station's limits, when the attack took place on Sunday evening. Video published by several outlets appears to show at least two gunmen firing repeatedly at the car at close range as it moved slowly past a crowd; police later said five to six rounds were fired. The attackers escaped on a motorcycle.

"Shroff is safe and has not sustained any injuries in the firing incident," a police official said that night. His driver and the driver of an auto-rickshaw were injured, and Shroff went to the police station to help officers piece together what had happened.

The arrests

Mumbai's crime branch traced the attackers within a day. Investigators recovered the motorcycle near Andheri (West) railway station, followed the owner's details to the suspects' escape route through Surat, and found them on a train in Kota, Rajasthan, about 15 hours after the shooting, with help from police in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Delhi. Mumbai Police took them into custody to bring them back to the city for questioning.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raj Tilak Roshan said the three are adults, one aged 18 and two aged 22, two from Haryana and one from Bihar, and that two of them fired the shots. No weapon has been recovered. The case has been registered at Juhu police station for attempted murder under section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the Arms Act. Roshan said the motive would only be known after questioning, and that Shroff had never filed a complaint about threats.

Soon after the shooting, a post on social media claimed responsibility in the Lawrence Bishnoi gang's name, and an audio message circulated claiming Tiger had been targeted for continuing to work with Salman Khan. Police have verified neither, and they have not linked the arrested men to any gang. We're reporting that the claims exist because they're shaping the conversation, but we're not repeating their threats.

Why Salman Khan's name keeps coming up

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang's hostility towards Salman Khan goes back to 1998, when the actor was accused of killing two blackbucks near Jodhpur during the shoot of Hum Saath Saath Hain. The Bishnoi community, which lives in the area, regards the blackbuck as sacred. A Jodhpur court convicted Khan in 2018 and sentenced him to five years; he was granted bail and his appeal is still pending. Lawrence Bishnoi has publicly said Khan humiliated his community, and, although he has been in jail for years, police say his network has kept operating from prison.

That is why every attack on a Bollywood figure now raises the same question about a link to Khan. In Tiger's case, that link is so far only a claim. Salman Khan's own security has reportedly been tightened again since Sunday.

There is also an earlier scare in Tiger's own file. In April 2025, Mumbai Police arrested a man from Punjab for a hoax call claiming there was a plot to kill him; the claim was false, and the caller's motive was a grudge against his employers.

How Tiger, his family and Bollywood reacted

Jackie Shroff's team gave the first update on his son: "Tiger is okay. Thank you so much." His mother, Ayesha Shroff, said simply, "God is great." Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, Eknath Shinde, visited the family and said Tiger and his mother were shaken. "These attempts to intimidate people will not be tolerated, and we will put an end to this hooliganism," he said.

The All Indian Cine Workers Association condemned the attack, saying gangsters want to "terrorize Bollywood personalities and extort money from them". "Today it's Tiger Shroff. Who is next?" its president asked. The sharpest personal reaction came from Vidyut Jammwal, Tiger's fellow action star, who asked in an Instagram video why the fans at the scene hadn't gone after the attackers, and called on Mumbai Police to make sure nothing like it happens again. Jackie Shroff replied in the comments: "Stay Blessed Bhidu."
